This FAQ Tube community question comes from Soapluvva who is working on a very focused niche on YouTube – something that I always encourage. Here’s the question:
YouTube changed their messaging system.
What, exactly, do I have to do so that a “Message” button will appear on my opening page or on the “About” page?
If you’ve been away from YouTube for a while or haven’t logged in to your channel for some time this can be very confusing with all of the old messaging options either moved or removed entirely.
Now that Google+ powers YouTube comments and YouTube’s messaging system you need to have a Google+ page or profile linked to the channel in order to use the messaging system.
I haven’t created a guide on how to do this as YouTube already have a detailed guide here – so follow that link to associate your channel and then check out my other tips below:
Once you’ve done this, log in with a different Google account and visit your channel’s About tab. You’ll see there is the ability to receive messages and if you visit the about tab of other YouTube channels you will have the ability to message them also.
The reason you need to log into a different account to check this is that YouTube won’t display the option to send a message to yourself and also will not display the option to logged out users who can’t send messages on YouTube.
Where do I find my YouTube messages?
Depending on how you have your Google+ notifications set up you may receive an email every time you receive a personal message via YouTube. If not though you will need to check your new inbox.
To find this simply navigate to Creator Studio > Community > Messages or for a shortcut you can go straight there via Youtube.com/messages once logged in.
I hope this helps and I know this only scratches the surface of the relationship between YouTube and Google+ and I plan to make more detailed guides about it in the future. Make sure you don’t miss this by signing up to my free newsletter This Week In YouTube.
